Mina Bissell
Mina J. Bissell (born 1940) is an Iranian-American cell biologist, Distinguished Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, known for demonstrating that tissue architecture and the extracellular matrix (ECM) control gene expression and the malignant phenotype.
Dynamic reciprocity and context
Against the prevailing view that the malignant phenotype is a cell-autonomous property of the mutated genome, Bissell developed the principle of “dynamic reciprocity”: the nucleus and the extracellular matrix communicate continuously, and tissue organization - the three-dimensional context in which a cell sits - is a first-order determinant of what its genes do.
